12.30pm - 1.00pm: Cutting-edge treatment options for Diabetes
The global epidemic of diabetes is growing at an alarming rate. Diabetes is an asymptomatic life-long disease. It is often known as a silent killer. Many people who have diabetes may not realise that they already have diabetes, and the serious diabetic health consequences, which include heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, blindness and leg amputation.
Studies, such as the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study, have shown that these complications are preventable if diabetes is better controlled. Unfortunately, the majority of people with diabetes do not achieve good sugar control.
In recent years, we have witnessed various new therapeutics made available in the treatment of diabetes. These include meglitinides, thiazolidinediones, incretins (GLP-1 agonists and dipeptidyl-peptidase IV inhibitors), insulin analogues, and continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion pump with continuous glucose monitoring system
With these new therapeutic options available in diabetes, the health benefits are wide-ranging. Screening for diabetes in those at risk is important for early diagnosis and treatment. Patients should take charge of their own health, and strive to control their diabetes so that debilitating diabetic complications are prevented.
